renting a DA-40 in the NYC area?
Hi,
I wonder where would one rent a DA-40 (or worst case a DA-20) from in NYC, between August 11-17?
I'd like to fly over the Hudson for the NYC scenic flight, with possibly an instructor for safety beside me.
any pointers welcome,
Akos

There used to be a flying school at Republic airport (KFRG) in Farmingdale Long Island that had a couple of DA40's in their school, not sure if they are still around or not.
Performance Flight at Westchester Airport (KHPN) has a DA42, SR22's and SR20's and Academy of Aviation also at KHPN has C172's.
The closest GA airports to NYC are NY Westchester County (KHPN), NJ Teterboro (KTEB) and NJ Essex county (KCDW).
If you want to fly the Hudson Corridor then I would rent a 172 with a CFI up at Westchester as it will be the cheapest.

One place to try is Freeflight Aviation at "Flying W" (N14) airport, a Diamond Flight Center with instructors and DA40s and DA20s for rent:
http://freeflight-aviation.com
They're located in New Jersey south of NYC, which is where you want to be to most easily fly up the Hudson River VFR. Don't forget to take the required online training course to fly in the Hudson River Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA):

Try Best in Flight at Linden, NJ (KLDJ). I was based out of there for four years of commuting to the Boston area. Definitely the most convenient to NYC and closest to the corridor.
What they will likely have you do is the helicopter route: over the 4 or 22 numbers at Newark, direct the statue, and up the river. Get yourself a terminal area map, and you will find the helicopter routes on the reverse side. You can do the tour at 1000' with the gaggle or at 1500' with EWR and LGA towers.

Sorry to reply too late... I was out of the country. But I second Freeflight at Flying W. I did transition training down there with Brian Robbins. They have a couple of DA40s and a DA20 available - friendly staff and very accommodating. For anyone asking in the future - they were the nearest place to NYC I found, and the airport seems like a fun destination during summertime with the pool, bar etc

+1 to Flying W. I finished up my PPL down there in February. I had originally been training out of KLDJ with Best in Flight, but they closed last May after a fatal accident involving one of their instructors (Craig MacCallum) in a DA-20. My DA-40 is based at KLDJ, as I live in NYC and the trip to N14 is about an hour and half by car (on a good day).

Re: renting a DA-40 in the NYC area?
Another +1 for Freeflight. Barbara and Frank are such nice people. The airport is quirky, clean and very active. They have DA-20 & 40, very we'll maintained.
The drive down from NYC does stink, however you get to fly along the same Turnpike on the way back to the city, which is cool. The return flight is about 35 minutes at high cruise. This will give you some time to settle down prior to arriving at Staten Island and entering the madness.
You can call New York Approach if you want Bravo clearance (which is what I do) and I always get it at 1500. Or fly the SFRA on your own, but be warned- the SFRA is congested on summer weekends. Air heli tours, news choppers, GA traffic and even convoys of military aircraft are common. ATC doesn't really seem to care what you do over the river as long as you explain it up front. A hidden benefit is that they will usually clear me to cross Manhattan over Central Park and continue down the (GA restricted) East River corridor. And finally, if you're based at LDJ like me, when you're done you can ask to fly direct and save 15 minutes.
