Not so sure it's a pipe dream from Diamond's perspective. President Eisenhower's 1961 warning about the Military-Industrial Complex has long since come to pass, so it doesn't matter what state the economy is in, military requirements take precedence over all other demands on state spending. Let's face it. We are a dying species.
Almost no-one on this planet can afford the combined financial, administrative and learning burden of being a "certified" pilot. Why do you think sales of ultralight aircraft are booming?
Sad as it may be, I think Diamond are making the right moves from their perspective. This however does not mean that I have understanding for their customer-care policy.
Owners of AVGAS burning Diamonds are left on their own. And if you own a diesel burner at least "they" remember they sold it to you some day....
